Morpholegical Study on the Cecal Development in Fetuses and Neonates in Korean Native Goats

Abstract
The morphological studies on the cecal development in the 60-, 90- and 120-day-old fetuses and the neonates of Korean native goats were investigated by light microscopy.
The results were summarized as follows ;
1. In the 60-day-old fetuses, the cecal walls were differentiated and divided into epithelium, lamina propria, tunics muscularis and serosa.
2. In the 60- and 90-day-old fetuses, the types of the cecal epithelia were simple columnar in some areas and stratified columnar in others. In the 120-day-old fetuses, however, the type of cecal epithelia was simple cohmnnar.
3. In the 60-day-old fetuses, the number of the villi appeared on the mucosal surface in the transverse section of cecal tract were about eight. In the 90-day-old fetuses, there are many cecal villi with leaf-like shapes. In the 120-day-old fetuses the cecal villi showed columnar type. The number and height of the cecal villi were more increased than those of 90-day-old fetuses. In the neonates, only the rudimental trace of the cecal villi were observed.
4. In 90-day-old fetuses, the intestinal glands and the goblet cells appeared in the cecal walls. The muscle layers of the cecal walls were distinguishably divided into the circular and longitudinal muscle layers.
5. In the 120-day-old fetuses, the circular and longitudinal muscle layers were well developed in the cecal wall. Also arteries and veins were distinctly developed in the serosa.
6. In the neonates, the muscle layers in the cecal walls were more developed than those of 120-day-old fetuses, and the collagenous fibers and the blood vessels in the cecal submucosa were well developed.
